The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas has concluded its online course in Spanish, Mathematics for Journalists, from Feb. 11 through March 23, 2008. The six-week course, was taught by instructor Sandra Crucianelli of Argentina.

The course covered six main themes:

•Basic math operations and their journalistic applications
•Obtaining and using data for journalistic purposes
•Measures of central tendency
•Measures of proportion
•Interpolation of external data
•Infographics: interpretations and applications

Students performed several weekly assignments on line. They include viewing at least three video lectures (totaling 15 minutes) and two PowerPoint presentations, reading lecture materials, and participating in discussion forums with the instructor and classmates. They also took a weekly multiple-choice exam.

All participants who complete the course will receive a certificate from the Knight Center.

Crucianelli has received national and international recognition for her reporting and teaching and is a specialist in precision journalism. She has offered her popular online courses since 2004 as part of the Knight Center's distance education program. She was assisted in the course by Paul Alonso and Rachel Barrera, staff members of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas was created at the University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism in August 2002 thanks to a generous donation from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Its main objective is to help journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean to develop their own self-sustaining training programs to elevate the professional and ethical levels of journalism in the Americas.
