The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin concluded its first online course, "Role of the Editor," from Sept. 2-30. Sixteen students from six Latin American countries participated.

The course was taught by George Sylvie, associate professor of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. It was designed for editors who wanted to improve their management and leadership skills.

"Role of the Editor" was conducted in English, but as the Knight Center expands its distance learning program, it will also feature courses in Spanish and Portuguese.

The course used multimedia resources, including graphics and videos. Students received all course material via Internet and submitted their assignments online.

The Knight Center will announce more online training courses soon.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas was created by Professor Rosental Calmon Alves at the University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism in August 2002 thanks to a generous donation from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Its main objective is to help journalists in the hemisphere to develop self-sustaining training programs that will raise the ethical and professional levels of journalism in the Americas.
