Editors Conclude Online CourseEditors Conclude Online Course

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin concluded a four-week online course, "The Role of the Editor," offerred to journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The course began Jan. 24, 2005 and was offered in English. It was a condensed, four-week version of the eight-week course that the Knight Center has offered three times previously. It was free of charge and was conducted totally online. It was specifically intended for the journalist who has limited time to take an online course but wishes to learn more about media management.

"The Role of the Editor" cevered the following topics:
-What is an Editor
-Leading, Making Decisions, Creating a Style
-Life as a Middle Manager
-Handling Change and Risk

The class was taught by George Sylvie, associate professor of journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. The application period is closed.

The course used multimedia resources, including graphics and video. Students received all course materials via Internet and submitted their assignments online. They set their own schedules and worked at their own pace. Those who successfully completed the course received a certificate.

This course was also part of a research project of the University of Texas at Austin that monitors the progress of students in an effort to better understand how distance-learning education can be used effectively to train journalists.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas was created by Professor Rosental Calmon Alves at the University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism in August 2002, thanks to a generous donation from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Its main objective is to help journalists in the hemisphere to develop self-sustaining training programs that will raise the ethical and professional levels of journalism in the Americas.
