Short Courses of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas

Online Course Over for Women Journalists Online Course Over for Women Journalists

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, in partnership with the International Women's Media Foundation, held the online course The Role of the Editor. The seven-week course began Oct. 4, 2004 and was offered to English-speaking women journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean. The application period has ended. However, the Knight Center plans to offer the course again in the future.

The course was taught entirely online by George Sylvie, associate professor of journalism at The University of Texas at Austin. It was designed to help journalists become more effective leaders while managing efficient newsrooms. Topics will include:

• What is an Editor?
• Vision - Developing a Plan and Creating Structure
• Leading - Making Decisions, Creating a Style
• Motivation - Managing Creative (and sometimes Difficult) People
• Life as a Middle Manager
• Communication and Feedback
• Handling Change and Risk
• Ethics

Video lectures, online discussions and assignments that pose real-life newsroom situations were used to address these topics. The class was conducted in English and was free of charge.

The Role of the Editor is one of several online courses offered as part of the Knight Center's distance learning program. Classes include video lectures, exercises, and discussions among students, and students work at their own pace. Upon completing the course, students will receive a certificate of participation.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas was created by Professor Rosental Calmon Alves at the University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism in August 2002 thanks to a generous donation from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Its main objective is to help journalists in the hemisphere to develop self-sustaining training programs that will raise the ethical and professional levels of journalism in the Americas.
