Short Courses of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas

Knight Center Finishes Online CAR Course to Train TrainersKnight Center Finishes Online CAR Course to Train Trainers

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin concluded its second online course in Portuguese, Training the Trainers, which began on August 27, 2004.

The six-week course dealt with computer-assisted reporting (CAR) and was designed specifically for 13 journalists who would assist in training larger groups of journalists in future CAR courses.

The course was taught by journalist José Roberto Toledo, director of Computer-Assisted Reporting (CAR) for the Brazilian Association for Investigative Journalism (Abraji), and of Jornal do Terra. Toledo gained experience in CAR in his work for the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo and received special training from Investigative Reporters and Editors.

The participants learned basics of CAR and worked with practical assignments and examples. The class was free of charge and conducted entirely through the Internet, using multimedia resources to assist with the discussions and exercises.

This was the fourth online course offered by the Knight Center as part of its distance learning project. Previous courses were taught in English and Portuguese, and the next will be conducted in Spanish.

The participants in the CAR course were:

Octavio Tostes, Rádio Bandeirantes, São Paulo
Liege Albuquerque, Diário do Amazonas, Manaus
Antônio Queiroga, Universidade Veiga Filho, Rio de Janeiro
Marcelo Soares, Abraji, Sâo Paulo

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas was created by Professor Rosental Calmon Alves at the University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism in August 2002 thanks to a generous donation from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Its main objective is to help journalists in the hemisphere to develop self-sustaining training programs that will raise the ethical and professional levels of journalism in the Americas.
