Short Courses of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas

Knight Center Completes First Online Course in PortugueseKnight Center Completes First Online Course in Portuguese

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin has completed its first online course in Portuguese, Computer-Assisted Reporting. The 13 journalists who concluded the course are from nine cities in nine Brazilian states.

The five-week course, which ended May 14, 2004, was taught by journalist José Roberto Toledo, director of Computer-Assisted Reporting (CAR) for the Brazilian Association for Investigative Journalism, and editor of Jornal do Terra.

The participants learned the basics of CAR by working with practical assignments and examples. Upon completing the course, they received a certificate from the Knight Center for Journalism. The class was conducted entirely through the Internet, using multimedia resources to assist with the discussions and exercises.

This is the third online course offered by the Knight Center as part of its distance learning project. The previous two training courses were taught in English, and the next will be conducted in Spanish. The Knight Center will offer the CAR course in Portuguese later again this year and is developing other courses in each of the three languages.
